Embracing a New Chapter: Setting Positive Intentions After Your Breakup or Divorce for the New Year and Your New Beginnings.

Top tips- By Sarah Steele Accredited Breakup and Divorce Coach and life Coach

As the New Year approaches, it’s a perfect time to reflect, refresh, and reset. For those navigating the complexities of divorce or a major breakup, this season marks a powerful opportunity to redefine your story and reclaim your confidence. Let’s explore how you can set positive intentions for this next chapter and embrace a life filled with joy, purpose, and empowerment.

Why the New Year Is Your Perfect Starting Point!

The end of a year symbolises closure—leaving behind what no longer serves you and stepping into a fresh beginning. This symbolism is especially meaningful for anyone emerging from a divorce or significant breakup. Rather than focusing on what was lost, think of this as a chance to reconnect with yourself and design a life that excites you.

You’re not starting over; you’re starting anew!

Every experience you’ve had up until now has prepared you for this moment of transformation. The New Year is your blank canvas—a space to paint a vision of the future you want to create.

Setting Positive Intentions for Your New Life

Intentions are more than just goals; they’re heartfelt commitments to how you want to feel and live. Here are some empowering intentions to consider:

  1. Embrace Self-Discovery: Commit to exploring your passions, interests, and values.

  2. Cultivate Joy: Focus on creating moments that bring you genuine happiness.

  3. Prioritize Your Well-Being: Make mental, emotional, and physical health a priority.

  4. Foster Growth: Approach challenges with curiosity and resilience.

  5. Welcome New Connections: Be open to forming meaningful relationships—romantic or otherwise—that align with your new chapter.

Practical Tools and Strategies for Empowerment

Feeling empowered and confident doesn’t happen overnight. Here are actionable steps you can take to support your journey:

1.    Create a Vision Board

Visualising your ideal future can be incredibly motivating. Gather magazines, photos, or printables that represent what you’re manifesting—whether it’s a thriving career, a peaceful home, or a sense of inner peace. Place your vision board somewhere visible to remind yourself of your intentions daily.

2.    Set SMART Goals

Break down your intentions into Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound goals. For example:

  • Instead of "Get fit," try "Attend a yoga class twice a week."

  • Instead of "Meet new people," aim for "Join a local book club this month."

3.    Practice Daily Affirmations

Affirmations help rewire your mindset and boost self-confidence. Try affirmations like:

  • "I am worthy of love and happiness."

  • "I am strong, capable, and resilient."

  • "This is my time to shine."

  • “I deserve to feel happy and at peace”

Write them on sticky notes, set them as reminders on your phone, or say them out loud each morning.

4.    Engage in Self-Care Rituals

Carve out time for yourself to recharge and reconnect. Ideas include:

  • Journaling your thoughts and feelings

  • Meditating for clarity and calm

  • Acknowledging and writing down, what you have in your life right now to be grateful for

  • Indulging in hobbies that light you up

1.    Build a Support System

Surround yourself with uplifting friends, family, or a coach like me, who can guide you through this transition.

2.    Reframe Your Narrative

Your story is yours to tell, and the way you frame it matters. Instead of saying, "I failed at my marriage," try, "I’m courageous for choosing a path that aligns with my truth."

Remember your story is yours, and you don’t have to share it with anyone!

3.    Learn Something New

Growth can come from stepping outside your comfort zone. Take a class, learn a skill, or try an activity you’ve always been curious about. It’s not only empowering but also a wonderful way to meet new people.

Getting Excited About the Future

This isn’t just about surviving; it’s about thriving. As you set your intentions, remember:

  • Gratitude grounds you. Reflect on the blessings in your life, no matter how small.

  •  Progress is not linear. Celebrate every step forward, even if there are setbacks along the way. Any step forward, no matter how small is a cause for celebration!

  • The best is yet to come. Life has a way of surprising us with unexpected joys when we remain open to possibility.

  • Spend some time and think about your “Breakup Bucket list’. Write down all the things that you want to do in your new life, it may be planning a holiday or starting a Pilates class. I find that my clients really enjoy this process, and it certainly helps them to focus on their future positively.

Each day, remind yourself that you are deserving of love, happiness, and success. This chapter may have begun with heartbreak, but it’s leading to a story of resilience and renewal!
