Summer Series: From Surviving to Rebuilding After Divorce:
Over the past two months, we've explored the first two stages of emotional recovery after divorce.
In June, we focused on Stabilise, understanding the importance of calming the nervous system and creating emotional safety.
In July, we explored Rebuild, reconnecting with confidence, self-trust and healthy boundaries.
This month brings us to the final stage of our summer series:
REDISCOVER
One of the biggest misconceptions about divorce is that healing means becoming the person you were before.
I don't believe that's the goal.
As a trauma-informed divorce coach, I've seen time and time again that while divorce changes people, it doesn't have to define them.
Many of my clients eventually reach a point where they realise they aren't trying to get their old life back.
They're beginning to create a new one.
Not because they chose what happened.
But because they get to choose what happens next.
That shift changes everything.
Rediscovery Is Not About Starting Again
One of the conversations I often have with clients is this:
"I don't even know who I am anymore."
If you've ever felt this way, you're not alone.
Divorce can leave us feeling disconnected from ourselves after years of focusing on a relationship, family responsibilities, or simply surviving.
Rediscovery isn't about finding the person you used to be.
It's about discovering the person you're becoming.
And often, that version of you is stronger, wiser and clearer about what truly matters.

3 Ways to Begin Rediscovering Yourself
1. Reconnect With What Brings You Joy
When life has revolved around stress, conflict or grief, joy often disappears quietly.
Ask yourself:
What used to make me feel alive?
What have I stopped doing because life became busy or difficult?
What small thing could I reintroduce this week simply because it makes me smile?
Joy isn't selfish.
It's part of healing.
2. Discover Your Values
One of the most powerful exercises I do with clients is exploring personal values.
When we know what matters most, decisions become clearer.
Ask yourself:
What do I want more of in my life?
What relationships feel healthy?
What kind of environment helps me thrive?
What qualities do I want to bring into this next chapter?
Living in alignment with your values creates confidence from the inside out.

3. Give Yourself Permission to Dream Again
After divorce, many people stop making plans because they're afraid of being disappointed.
But healing also means allowing yourself to imagine a future that feels hopeful.
It doesn't have to be a huge vision.
Perhaps it's:
travelling somewhere new
changing careers
learning a new skill
building new friendships
creating a peaceful home
simply waking up feeling calmer
Hope grows when we give ourselves permission to imagine possibilities again.
Nervous System Reset
Your Future Self Exercise
I invite you to take one slow breath.
Close your eyes for a moment and imagine yourself one year from now.
Not perfect.
Not problem-free.
Just calmer.
Ask yourself:
"What has helped me become this version of myself?"
Write down the first three words that come to mind.
Those words are often pointing you towards what you need most right now.
Communication Corner
Speak to Yourself with Compassion
One of the most important conversations you'll ever have is the one you have with yourself.
Notice when your inner dialogue sounds like:
"I should be over this."
"I've failed."
"I'll never be happy again."
Instead, try asking:
"What would I say to someone I love who was going through this?"
Then offer yourself the same kindness.

Positive Psychology Corner
Best Possible Future Self
Research in positive psychology shows that spending time imagining your "best possible future self" can increase optimism and motivation.
Spend ten minutes writing about the life you hope to create over the next few years.
Focus less on what you want to own and more on how you want to feel.
Perhaps your future includes:
peace
confidence
meaningful relationships
good health
laughter
purpose
emotional freedom
The future starts with the choices we make today.
Professional Insight Corner
For fellow divorce professionals:
Recovery doesn't end when legal matters conclude.
Many clients need support in rebuilding identity, purpose and confidence long after the paperwork is complete.
Helping clients recognise their strengths, values and future possibilities can play an important role in post-divorce growth.
Sometimes the greatest transformation happens after the crisis has passed.

Reflection Question for August
Imagine it is this time next year.
What do you hope your future self thanks you for doing today?

A Final Thought from me
As we come to the end of this summer series, I want to leave you with something I often say to my clients:
Divorce may be part of your story, but it does not have to define the rest of it.
You are more than what you've been through.
You are stronger than you realise.
And when you're ready, this next chapter has the potential to be one of the most meaningful of your life.
Thank you for allowing me to be part of this journey over the summer. Whether you've read one newsletter or all three, I hope they've reminded you of one thing:
Healing is possible.
And so is hope.
Until next time, take care of yourself, be kind to yourself, and remember…
Your next chapter starts with the decision to put yourself first.
