Reclaiming Your Life After Divorce: Moving Forward with Purpose & Joy

By Sarah Steele Accredited Breakup and Divorce Master Coach, Life Coach and Neuro Linguistic Practitioner.

Divorce is often seen as an ending, but what if it’s actually a beginning??

What if this is your chance to rediscover yourself, redefine your goals, and create a life filled with joy and purpose?

Your past doesn’t define you. Your divorce doesn’t define you. What defines you is the choices you make from this moment forward.

As a Breakup, Separation and Divorce Coach, here are some of the exercises I share with my clients to help you.

Shift Your Focus: The Power of “Be, Do, Have”

One of the biggest challenges after divorce is shifting your mindset from loss to opportunity. A powerful way to do this is through the Be, Do, Have exercise:

  1. Be – Who do you want to become? Confident? Independent? Adventurous?

  2. Do – What actions will help you step into this version of yourself? Travelling? Learning a new skill? Setting new personal goals?

  3. Have – What will you naturally attract into your life once you embody this new identity? A fulfilling career? Deeper friendships? Inner peace?

By focusing on who you want to be rather than what you’ve lost, you open up endless possibilities!

The Breakup Bucket List: Your Path to Rediscovery

When you were in your marriage, there were probably things you put on hold. Dreams you set aside. Adventures you never took. Now is the time to create your Breakup Bucket List—a list of all the things you want to experience now that you’re free to design your own life.

Start by asking yourself:

  • What have I always wanted to try but never did?

  • What places have I longed to visit?

  • What hobbies light me up?

  • What personal goals excite me?

Write them down. Take small steps to start checking them off. Each time you do, you’ll build confidence and excitement for this new chapter.

NLP Techniques to Rewire Your Mindset

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is something that I am passionate about as it offers incredible tools to help shift your thinking and accelerate your healing.

Here are three techniques that I use with my clients that you too  can use:

  1. Reframing: Instead of saying “I failed at marriage,” reframe it as, “I am evolving into a stronger, wiser version of myself.”

  2. Anchoring: Think of a time when you felt powerful and unstoppable. Close your eyes, recall the moment vividly, and squeeze your fist. Each time you need confidence, repeat this action.

  3. Future Pacing: Visualise your ideal future—see yourself thriving, smiling, and loving life. Make this vision so real in your mind that your subconscious starts working to make it happen.

Handy Tips for Moving Forward with Joy

  • Declutter Your Space & Energy – Let go of items that tie you to the past and make room for the new.

  • Surround Yourself with Uplifting People – Seek out those who inspire and support your growth.

  • Create a Self-Care Ritual – Whether it’s journaling, meditation, or exercise, find what nourishes your soul.

  • Celebrate Every Win – No matter how small, acknowledge your progress.

I want you to know that Your Divorce is Not the End—It’s Your Reinvention

You are not broken. You are not lost. You are becoming. This is your moment to step into the life you truly deserve.

So, what’s the first thing you’ll add to your Breakup Bucket List? How will you start embodying the person you want to become today?

Your future is waiting. Go claim it with purpose and joy!
